The GSN Self-Assessment Process for Service-Learning

Urban institute
Using the self-assessment guide and rubrics was very successful. The self- assessment process is helping us decide what needs to be done to be able to meet the standards of quality service-learning. Kathryn Lee, GSN Member

Concurrent with the release of the K-12 Service-Learning Standards for Quality Practice in the spring of 2008, NYLC launched a comprehensive process for schools to improve their classroom practice through the use of a self-assessment process based on those quality standards.

By participating in the self-assessment, GSN members 1) identify strengths and weaknesses in their practice, and 2) develop strategies and steps to improve their practice.

Getting Started

Getting started in the GSN self-assessment process is easy. The GSN provides a set of rubrics based on the K-12 Service-Learning Standards as well as a comprehensive guide developed by the University of Wisconsin—Milwaukee. You will use the rubrics to rate the quality of your program against the national quality practice standards. The following step-by-step process has been developed to help you guide yourself in the process.
